This is not how you get these sickos caught. If police are not acting on a tip, take your information to the commanding officers and then to the city manager or city council that employs them. If they dont respond, go to the state police. If that fails go to federal authorities. If you have evidence of a child molester, and you can’t get the authorities to act within a few MONTHS… either they checked it out and he hasn’t broken any laws, or more likely, you simply haven’t tried very hard. Sending a single mail off to some cops is a pretty limp effort.

Well, I do understand neil’s point. Just because he’s defending this man’s right to a fair trial does not make him a pedophile. Now, let me say if this man is guilty of these things, he definitely deserves to be punished, and probably needs some mental help in the process. Normal people aren’t out going after young girls like that. In fact, I read an article where a guy was going along in a normal life, but then started exhibiting signs of pedophilia. After some searching, they discovered that a tumor had grown on some part of his brain. They removed it, and no more pedophilia! A few years later, though, he started to exhibit those tendencies again. They went and looked, and the tumor had grown back in the same place. Strange, huh? Weird to think how much our brains affect the decisions we make.

But I suspect some of you live in a more black-and-white world where people who do these things are “evil” and people who go to church every Sunday are “good.”

My point is… the law enforcement agencies need to act on this information and see if he really is guilty. If he is convicted by a jury of his peers based on *evidence* (gasp!) and not just a video that surely could have been edited by someone who knew what they were doing, then he deserves to be punished (and get help).

Otherwise, we will take another step toward a world without civil liberties. A world where being accused is the same things as being guilty. And that’s a world I don’t want to live in.

The other side of that coin is that I have two friends who have been unjustly accused of things. One is now considered a “sex offender,” even though his ex-wife masterminded the whole deal. He’s a great guy, but on this board he would be condemned as innocent with no evidence other than the accusation itself.

I’m not defending sex offenders. Trust me, if someone did something to a child and I was around, I would probably end up in jail because of what I did to that person. But some of the views expressed here are a little scary to me, that’s all. Maybe part of it is my own experience with my friends. I’m sure we all have experiences that bias us to some degree.

As a parent of young children, I feel sorry for this fellow. And to Mofo’s comments… you make a good point. The justice system isn’t perfect. And because it isn’t perfect, I feel we should err on the side of innocence and not guilt. You obviously feel the opposite. I would prefer to have a few guilty people still free than innocent people in jail. But that’s me. It’s all in the way you look at life, I suppose. If you see life in a medieval way where it’s better to kill and torture first and ask questions later whenever someone is accused of something, that’s your choice. But it’s not mine.

I certainly agree that *crimes* against children are horrible. But we haven’t yet established that a crime has been committed. Consider this scenario…

Let’s say this guy was dating some girl, and they had online sex once in a while. She finds out he’s cheating on her (wrong, perhaps, but not illegal or damaging to children), but instead of confronting him, she hatches a plan… she claims to be turned on when he calls her by different names. So he does. And then she inserts a few pictures of 14-year olds which are not connected to this guy in the video in any way… they’re just inserted. She creates a few fake chat conversations, and uploads it to YouTube. Voila. This guy is the scourge of the internet.

Too far-fetched? I don’t think so. And as long as there is the *possibility* of innocence, our legal system says we cannot convict. We must be “beyond reasonable doubt.” I personally would require more evidence than this video to convict this man. If he turns out to be guilty, he deserves what he gets. But if you don’t think video and audio can be manipulated, you need a reality check.

People seem to shift the issue back to “people who do bad things to children deserve to be punished.” I certainly agree with this. The question I’m raising is, “How do we know for certain that this man is guilty?” He has been accused. A video has been shown. It has been turned over to the police. It is now their job to find enough evidence to convict this man.

It is not our job to take the law into our own hands every time we see something that makes our emotions high. If we do that, our society is no more free than any other country like Iraq or North Korea. We have effectively brought ourselves down to an ancient mindset. Definitely. Even if this particular guy isn’t guilty (and he may well be), there are *definitely* people like him out there. I personally wouldn’t let my kids have internet access in their rooms (if I had kids).

This brings up what might be an interesting topic (we may have worn this other one out)… what do you guys think about spying on what your kids do on the internet? There are various programs that can allow you to see where they went, who they talked to, their email, etc… where is the ethical line between respecting your children’s privacy and making sure they aren’t doing something that could endanger them?
